Rule 1: Commit yourself to tidying up.

Setting the intention is half the battle. Once you make the commitment, everything else will fall into place. You’ll be able to find the motivation and energy to tidy, and it will quickly start to feel like a joyful, transformative process!

Rule 2: Imagine your ideal lifestyle.

“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.” – The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo

When you set out to tidy, you’re starting the journey to your ideal lifestyle. Once you tidy, other areas of your life will start to fall into place, too. You will feel lighter and freer, having dealt with your belongings. This is the life-changing magic of tidying up!

Rule 3: Finish discarding first.

It doesn’t make sense to organize those 100 hair ties if you plan on getting rid of most of them. Same goes for two of the same shirt, those pants that don’t fit, or all those specialty kitchen accessories you bought on a whim. By discarding first, you’ll find that you have more storage space than you originally thought.

Rule 4: Tidy by category, not by location.

I know, I know, this goes against everything you’ve learned when it comes to organizing. But trust me (and more importantly, trust Marie Kondo!) – this way makes sure you go through every item and don’t rebound. It allows you to truly see how much you own.

Rule 5: Follow the right order.

The category order – Clothing, Books, Papers, Komono (miscellaneous), and Sentimental – has been honed by Marie Kondo herself after years of tidying and many, many clients. It encourages us to start with a relatively easier category and then move on to harder and harder categories. We struggle the most to tidy Sentimental items, like photos, because of our emotional attachment to them.

Rule 6: Ask yourself if it sparks joy.

“I can think of no greater happiness in life that to be surrounded only by the things I love.” – The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo

The KonMari Method is about to keep, not what to get rid of. People assume that it promotes minimalism, which isn’t true. If that’s your style, then go for it! But the KonMari Method is for all decorating styles and all types of homes. Joy is free for anyone to attain!
